Suffering in Other Fiction

The Dark Knight Rises

In this third and final installment of the latest Batman film series, suffering is starkly present. After falling to Bane, the latest threat to Gothem City, Bruce Wayne (aka "The Batman") is cast into a pit of misery, pain, and suffering. This pit is where Bane grew up and where he learned how to survive. Now, to defeat Bane, The Batman must rise from the same pit. A pit that only one person had ever escaped.

Above is a clip from Star Trek: The Next Generation "Chain of Command Part:2." Captain Jean Luc Picard is taken prisoner and is tortured. Throughout the process, his interrogator asks him how many lights he sees. While there are only four lights, his interrogator insists that there are five, and punishes Picard every time he says four. Unwilling to be manipulated, Picard takes the punishments, never once caving to say what his torturer wants him to say.

Dante's Inferno

Dante's Inferno describes Dante's tour through the nine circles of Hell, viewing the suffering of sinful souls. Each circle is reserved for specific sins. 1) Limbo for the unbaptized pagans, 2) Lust, 3) Gluttony, 4) Avarice and Prodigality, 5) Wrath and Sullenness, 6) Heresy, 7) Violence, 8) Fraud, and 9) Treachery. Each sin has its own fitting punishment.
