2015-2016 Big Idea "Unbroken" Resources for students and faculty.

Faces of Redemption in Pop Culture

In J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series, Professor Severus Snape originally serves the story's antagonist, Voldemort. But in the end, he realizes how wrong he was and sacrifices his life to defeat his old master. (Image by Wikimedia Commons)

Fitzwilliam Darcy, a central character in Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, doesn't leave readers with a positive first impression. But over the course of the novel, his love for Elizabeth Bennet changes him for the better.  (Image by Amazon)

When Han Solo is first introduced in the original Star Wars trillogy, he's portrayed as a greedy smuggler whose sole motivation is money. But by the end of the film, he risks his life doing what's right without asking for anything in return. (Image by Wikimedia Commons)

The Theme

In Unbroken, redemption is a key theme. Louie suffers greatly at the hands of his captors, and the experience leaves him forever marked. Even after he returns home and marries the woman of his dreams, he's still haunted by the past. This puts him into a vicious downward spiral of substance abuse and unquenchable anger.

Once Louie hits rock bottom and discovers religion, his life changes completely. He finds purpose as a speaker, puts the bottle away, and becomes a new man. In Louie, readers don't just find hope for others; they see that they too can change for the better.
