Student Laptop Basics

To connect to the Schreiner campus wireless network: (this network is open only to the Schreiner community)

  1. Insert the wireless NIC card into the bottom slot on side of laptop. (Position of this slot varies by laptop model.)

  2. Plug one end of the AC adapter into the laptop and the other end into an electrical outlet.

  3. Turn on the computer.

    1. You may have to move to a new location to get a good network signal.

    2. Green indicators glow on the external wireless NIC when connected.    

  4. Save your work to a jump/flash drive.

  5. E-mailing a document to yourself is a good way to preserve your work.

To work without a connection to the Schreiner campus wireless network:

  1. Turn on the computer.

  2. When dialog box appears stating: “could not access the local server”, click “OK”.

  3. Save your work early and often to a jump/flash drive.

Turning off the laptop:

  1. Close all open applications.

  2. Press Ctrl/Alt/Del and select “Shut Down”.

  3. Click “OK”.

  4. If laptop displays message “now ready to be turned off”, hold the power button until the laptop has turned off. 

About Battery Use: Use of the AC adapter is strongly recommended!! Save early and often!

  1. The laptop will notify you with a dialog box and a series of warning beeps when the battery begins to run low. 

  2. Save your work to a flash/jump drive immediately.

  3. Plug the AC adapter into the laptop and then into a wall outlet to begin battery recharging.

  4. You may continue working.

Be sure all parts (carrying case, AC adapter, and laptop)
are returned to the Library. Fines are charged for late laptops at midnight.
