Frequently Asked Questions
- What is Instant Messaging?
Real-time communication
You can chat with us without logging into any specific program. Just look for a Meebo window on various library web pages. You may also choose to use an instant messaging provider (multiple IM programs exist and you may need to create an email address with the provider in order to use their IM service).
The Library has created logins in the following programs:
- AOL Instant Messenger (AIM)
- GoogleTalk
- ICQ
- Meebo
- Windows Live Messenger
- Yahoo! Messenger
You can add us to your list of contacts. Our IDs include:
- schreinerlibrary (AIM, ICQ, Meebo)
- schreinerlibrary@gmail.com (Google Talk)
- schreinerlibrary@live.com (Windows Live Messenger)
- schreinerlibrary@yahoo.com (Yahoo!)
- Is our chat session private?
Mostly, yes. We will keep a record of the chat for statistical and research purposes. However, any identifying information (like your screen name) will be removed.
- Is IM’ing the library safe?
Generally, yes. But as with most things online, you shouldn’t send any sensitive information over IM (such as password, social security number, student ID, etc.). The library will also never send you a program to download. Programs sent over IM can easily contain viruses or other malicious software that could hurt your computer.
You can read about ways to keep your computer safe in Microsoft’s 5 Steps to Help Avoid Instant Message Viruses.
You can also contact the library via the TXT A LiBRN service, by calling the Reference Desk at 830-792-7319 or by visiting the library.
